She had no idea about his huge gambling debts, and is getting no sympathy from her hurt and angry twenty something daughter. With nowhere else to turn, Sydney takes shelter at a college friend's B&B in Cedar key, Florida, where she begins to form a plan. As Syd turns her talent at spinning wool and knitting into a retail venture, other doors begin to open. She steps into the embrace of a community rich with love, laughter, friendship...and secrets. And soon she faces a choice: spin a safety net, or spin forward and never look back.

The author Terri Dulong has a website with lots of resources. It's the sequel to Casting Spells, which was a real crowd pleaser when we read it together last year. Here's a review from Publisher's Weekly:

Half-sorceress Chloe Hobbs and policeman Luke MacKenzie, the only humans in the
sleepy Vermont town of Sugar Maple, face worldly and unearthly challenges in
this sweetly charming sequel to 2008's Casting Spells. When Luke's ex-wife,
Karen, shows up in town claiming that their dead daughter is trying to ask them
for help, Chloe must deal with smalltown gossip and fix her relationship with
Luke while she battles her old Fae enemy, Isadora, over the child's spirit and
the future of Sugar Maple. Bretton seamlessly blends a playful world of
eccentric and meddling supernatural creatures living in the midst of New England
with a warm, natural and romantic story and just a hint of mystery. Scenes in
Chloe's yarn shop and helpful knitting tips hold extra appeal for yarn
aficionados while never distracting from the plot.

June 12 is going to be a big day-- can't wait to see you there!

Get out of the April Showers with Knit Lit-- Saturday, April 10!

April will be a fun discussion-- we're reading The Princess of the Midnight Ball by Jessica Day George.

Returning home from the war, young Galen finds work with his mother’s family in the royal gardens. There he learns that the king’s twelve daughters have a secret: every night they dance their shoes to tatters, but no one knows how or why. When prince after prince tries and fails to find the answer, and the family is haunted by accusations of witchcraft, Galen decides to help. Armed with a pair of silver knitting needles and an invisibility cloak given to him by a strange old woman, he follows the princesses and unlocks the secret of their curse. Suggested by our member Kathy, it's already getting quite a buzz with our "read ahead" members! Lots to discuss!

Here's a quick summary of the novel:

Lauren Gray Hawthorne needs to make things pretty, whether she's helping her mother keep family skeletons in the closet or sewing her acclaimed art quilts. Her estranged sister, Thalia, is her opposite, an impoverished actress who prides herself on exposing the lurid truths lurking behind middle class niceties.

While Laurel's life seems neatly on track --- a passionate marriage, a treasured daughter, a lovely suburban home --- everything she holds dear is threatened the night she is visited by the ghost of her 13-year-old neighbor Molly. The ghost leads Laurel to the real Molly, floating lifelessly in the Hawthorne's backyard pool. Molly's death is an unseemly mystery that no one in her whitewashed neighborhood is up to solving. It's the second mystery in the Jane Jeffrey series, but it is not crucial that we read book 2 before the others. Here's the summary from her publisher:

Life is hectic enough for suburban single mom Jane Jeffrey this Christmas season--what with her having to survive cutthroat church bazaar politics and finish knitting the afghan from Hell at the same time. The last thing the harried homemaker needs is an unwelcome visit from old acquaintance Phyllis Wagner and her ill-mannered brat of a teenage son. And the Wagner picture becomes even more complicated when a dead body is woven into the design.

Solving a murder, however, is a lot more interesting than knitting, so Jane's determined to sew the whole thing up. But with a plethora of suspects and the appearance of a second corpse, this deadly tapestry is getting quite complex indeed. And Jane has to be very careful not to get strangled herself by the twisted threads shes attempting to unravel.

I think we all have struggled with an afghan from Hell at one point or another :D

Here's author Jill Churchill's official site if you would like to learn more about her and her mysteries.

September 5th: Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7nQuEWPrB0Y/SoGm57L6nsI/AAAAAAAAAEk/z93_z4p50uM/s200/caramelo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368755744872767170" />
Get ready to read, because September's book is a big one, you can do it! We'll be meeting Saturday, September 5th, 2pm! Perhaps some Mexican treats will be served, you'll have to come to find out!

The book selection is Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros.

Summary from Salon:

"Caramelo," is a multigenerational story of a Mexican-American family whose voices create a dazzling weave of humor, passion and poignancy. Lala Reyes' grandmother is descended from a family of renowned rebozo, or shawl, makers. The striped caramelo rebozo is the most beautiful of all, and the one that makes its way, like the family history it has come to represent, into Lala's possession.

The novel opens with the Reyes' annual car trip -- a caravan overflowing with children, laughter and quarrels -- from Chicago to "the other side": Mexico City. It is there, each year, that Lala hears her family's stories, separating the truth from the "healthy lies" that have ricocheted from one generation to the next. We travel from the Mexico City that was the "Paris of the New World" to the music-filled streets of Chicago at the dawn of the Roaring '20s -- and, finally, to Lala's own difficult adolescence in the not-quite-promised land of San Antonio, Texas.

Listen to the author read from Caramelo here.

Random House published a reader's guide to the novel here.

Learn more about Sandra Cisneros on her official website.

July and August updates!

The dog days of summer are here-- be sure to beat the heat with the Knit*Lit book club choices!

Saturday, July 11 is going to be our discussion on Gil McNeil's charming "Brit Knit" book, The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club. It's getting rave reviews from the speedy readers in the club, so we're going to look forward to your opinion on it this Saturday!

August 8th we'll get to gether to discuss The Florabama Ladies' Auxiliary & Sewing Circle by Lois Battle. (Available in both regular and large print) This story begins with the closing of the Cherished Lady, a lingerie factory where most of the characters work as seamstresses.

Review from the Penguin Reading Guide:

Lois Battle's newest novel is about women whose lives change in an instant. For Bonnie Cullman, the change comes when her husband reveals that he has squandered hundreds of thousands of dollars, and that he is leaving her without a dime. For Ruth and Hilly and the rest of their coworkers, the change comes when they learn that Cherished Lady, the company they work for, is moving to Mexico and leaving them without a paycheck. In terms of circumstances, living style, and expectations, you couldn't find a bigger difference between Bonnie and the workers laid off from Cherished Lady. But they have more in common than it appears. They have resilience, strength, and principles. They have the ability to see beyond the limitations of their present lives. And they have the power to help themselves and each other.

Next up: How to Make an American Quilt on June 13!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 120px; height: 173px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7nQuEWPrB0Y/SgHJ9TpV9FI/AAAAAAAAAEc/hzy5xk4weoA/s320/imageDB.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332765488866260050" />
We had a great discussion this month (and some tasty cookies and teas) Many thanks to all who came and made it so fun!

June's selection is How to Make an American Quilt by Whitney Otto. It has quilt patterns and much more. Planet Patchwork has a nice review here.

Happy reading until we meet again at 2 pm on Saturday, June 13 for another fun Knit*Lit discussion!

Death by Cashmere-- what a way to go! :) May 2

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 210px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7nQuEWPrB0Y/Sd4hgamMjjI/AAAAAAAAAEU/rWD1WXKFtGo/s320/n260652.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322728650377563698" />

We had a great discussion this month about Casting Spells. An informal knitting group of eccentric characters forms around the shop, including Birdie Favazza, the oldest member at nearly 80, and Cass Halloran, the owner of 200 lobster traps who's devastated by a midnight theft. Cass's younger brother, Pete, pines for the gorgeous Angelina Archer, who's recently come to the Cape to research a local history project and rents the apartment above Izzy's store. When Angelina's body washes up in the cove, Izzy and her knitting group vow to discover who hated Angelina enough to want the woman dead. A knitting pattern for a scarf rounds out a cozy many will find an ideal beach read.

You will want to be "Casting Spells" with the KnitLit Book Club on April 4!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7nQuEWPrB0Y/SbQZVYk9ZXI/AAAAAAAAAEM/7fqQbEJwF_o/s320/n265208.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5310897715742074226" />

In April we will be reading Casting Spells by Barbara Bretton. After a classy female tourist drowns mysteriously in an icy lake in remote Sugar Maple, Vt., the Montpelier authorities ask Boston homicide cop Luke MacKenzie to investigate. As Sugar Maple's temporary police chief, Luke soon notices the village's odd ambience. Originally a haven for witches who fled the Salem witchcraft trials three centuries earlier, Sugar Maple is now home to witches, vampires, fairies and trolls. Luke is also attracted to Chloe Hobbs, the half-human owner of the knitting shop Sticks & Strings, who must find Mr. Right if she's to preserve the spell that sustains the town's unusual residents. As sparks literally fly between the two, Chloe's "magickal" side stirs into life. Bretton charmingly depicts how love empowers Chloe and awakens Luke to some major surprises. The story, based on historical events, takes place in 1824 on the tiny island of Gotland off the coast of Sweden.

Booklist review calls it "a spare drama of people waiting for a ship to come home. The story is told with simple beauty in the voice of 11-year-old orphan Ursula. Her beloved aunt is one of the women who sailed to Stockholm to sell the island's sweaters, which were knitted by everyone--men, women, and children--from the wool of the local sheep. There are storms at sea, and the ship is late returning. An outsider on the island, Ursula has never been able to learn to knit, but while she scans the horizon and hears the wind, she gets out her knotted mess of wool and painstakingly teaches herself to knit those rows in a pattern of waves. The knitting metaphor is rooted in a very real craft of needles, stitches, and yarn. Author Brunonia Barry called up our club and answered our questions, tantalized us with hints of what is yet to come from her pen, and shared that she knows how to knit! It was a great surprise and our very first author call. Brunonia, if you are reading this, you are a delight and we enjoyed talking to you!

December's book is The Tenth Gift by Jane Johnson. Here's a synopsis from the author's website:

On a Sunday morning in July 1625, Barbary pirates sail into a quiet Cornish bay and storm the church. Their loot: sixty men, women and children, kidnapped and bound for northern Morocco, where they are to be sold in the thronging slave market of the Souq el Ghezel.

Amongst them is Catherine Anne Tregenna, a talented young embroiderer. But as her diary reveals, Cat is anything but the subservient and compliant slave that her captors were expecting - and as the coast of England fades from sight, adventure beckons in the East ...

In an exclusive London restaurant, a gift is given that will change Julia Lovat's life. The antique book of Jacobean embroidery delights her, but when she settles down to read it more closely, she unexpectedly discovers within its foxed and faded pages the extraordinary diary of a young Cornish girl, calling to her from across the centuries...

The stories of these two women are destined to converge in an extraordinary and haunting manner.

One of our club members did a little digging and provided us with the following links that can add to your enjoyment of the book!

First of all, Random House has made a Reader's Guide available here. It's got some good points for our discussion.

Want to know what inspired Jane Johnson to write this story? Check this page out, it's all about her inspirations for writing the novel.

If you'd like to learn more about the author, there's an interview here that may interest you.

The Lace Reader

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 132px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7nQuEWPrB0Y/SQonMSx1G0I/AAAAAAAAADo/hlYiqVvysjQ/s200/lacereader.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263062206688598850" />
This Saturday, we'll be talking about the Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry. Why are we reading this book in September? Miss Marple is often seen knitting in her books and film/tv adaptations. By turns achingly sad and intensely romantic, it's a Cinderella story for anyone who's ever felt overlooked - or anyone who's ever had their heart broken...Eight years ago, Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth fell head over heels in love. But Anne's family put a stop to their engagement, believing he wasn't good enough for her. Anne soon realises she's made a terrible mistake. Then Captain Wentworth walks back into her life again. Can he forgive her? Does he still love her? And could they ever be happy, after all this time?

Austen 101: Getting the most out of Persuasion

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7nQuEWPrB0Y/R_VMJJnduHI/AAAAAAAAABY/cIfghHql8zM/s320/484px-Jane_Austen_coloured_version.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185134266070972530" />
If Persuasion is going to be your first time reading Jane Austen, you're in for a treat! And she's just got herself in a stitch. When Ariadne enters her knitting store one day to find longtime customer Edith Perry strangled to death with homespun yarn, she fears her life is about to come undone -- again, since she's still getting over a divorce. Her worries increase when she's questioned by detective Joshua Pierce, who may or may not have designs on her. While Josh pieces together the details of the crime, clues about Ariadne's ties to Miss Perry come to light...and a bizarre pattern unfolds. Now it's up to Ariadne to do some sleuthing of her own. Our club is getting more popular, because it was hard to get the 8 copies of the book into the right hands at the right time! Even if you didn't get a chance to read the book, join us anyway if you're not afraid of spoilers.

Popmatters reviewed the book last year, and they made some interesting comparisons between chick-lit books to Jane Austen. Here's the link if you're interested in checking it out.
